Safety Performance placement
This scheme is designed for highly-numerate undergraduates who have completed their second year at university. Using your excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, you will have the opportunity to experience air traffic management safety performance analysis.
Working with a range of bespoke tools and programs, your 12-month placement within the Safety performance department will give you a great head start going into your final year at university and your future career.
What does it involve?
You will be given the opportunity to work on a variety of safety analysis for our customers in internal operations, engineering and senior management. From the start, you’ll be expected to perform robust analysis, meet deadlines and take responsibility for conducting many departmental key tasks. Under supervision, you’ll be given the chance to manage your own activities and time, ensuring that you become a valuable member of the safety performance team.
Training and development
As a self-motivated student, you’ll be encouraged to get as much out of the year as possible by developing mathematical and statistical analytical skills, while using a range of IT and programming packages. You will also write reports and present the results of your work to customers and colleagues.
You will receive on-the-job training for specific areas of work, giving context to your tasks and allowing you to learn how safety is managed and analysed. Safety performance staff have a range of technical backgrounds, from mathematics and statistics to operational and safety engineering, so there are always plenty of people for you to learn from.
Types of Roles
The sandwich year, alongside your degree qualification, will help prepare you for an analyst role in industry. Over time, you tend to specialise in an area of a business and focus on that one stream of analysis, although the skills you learn are highly sought after and can lead to opportunities elsewhere within a business.
NATS has a very team-oriented culture which thrives on everyone working together and supporting each other. That’s why we work in open plan offices to allow easy interaction, which in turn creates a more relaxed environment. Everyone is friendly, welcoming and always happy to help.
Who can apply?
This structured scheme is open to anyone studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a numerate, science-based or analytical discipline. In terms of your skills and strengths, we look for excellent interpersonal and IT skills, an analytical background, attention to detail, drive and commitment.
Our medical branch will test you for your general health. You will also be security cleared.
How to apply
Although applications for the scheme open in October and close at the end of November, we encourage you to apply as early as possible, as places are limited.
We’ll select you for the next stage on the basis of your initial online application, so please do take the time to sell yourself and answer all the questions to the best of your ability. If you’re successful, we’ll invite you to an assessment centre in December.
Assessment centre structure
You’ll start with a welcome meeting with our graduate coordinator, graduates and placement students, so there’ll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get the inside track on what it’s like to work here.
The rest of the day consists of group exercises to assess your team-working skills, a competency and knowledge-based interview.
During the group exercise, you will be provided with a scenario and asked to discuss and solve a problem as a group. In the personal and technical interview, you will get the chance to tell the NATS assessors about yourself and why you want to work for the organisation. This interview will focus on situations in which you have demonstrated particular competencies and there will also be technical questions to assess how you tackle analytical problems.
