Our Aeromedical Examiners (AMEs)

Checking you are safe and ‘fit to fly’

Aeromedical Examiners sometimes referred to as AMEs (Approved or Aviation Medical Examiners)  are doctors who have been audited and approved by the CAA to carry out special aviation medical examinations, such as those required by air traffic controllers (ATCOs), commercial pilots, private pilots and cabin crew.

AMEs are themselves certified to assess your fitness to fly or to work in safety critical positions in aviation

AMEs are themselves certified to assess your fitness to fly or to work in safety critical positions in aviation, such as in ATC roles. The aim of the aeromedical examiner is not to “fail” you but to help you perform safely and know how specific health conditions may impact on your ability to perform your tasks.

Have confidence in your AME

When selecting an AME to conduct your medical examination you want someone who will put you at ease as well as being appropriately qualified, with a strong understanding of the aviation sector.

At NATS our Aeromedical Examiners understand military, airline, general aviation and air traffic control demands. Our team are very aware of the pressures that people in such roles face and the anxieties that come with aviation medical examinations, whether it is your first or your twenty-first medical.

Your AME will provide you with advice and explain, in easy to understand terms, what you need to know and do

You will be encouraged to ask questions so you will benefit from the opportunity to find out about your own health, why the aviation medical tests are carried out and how any health conditions may impact on your work. By helping you understand more about your health it is more likely that serious conditions can be prevented from developing or be managed effectively.

Your AME will provide you with advice and explain, in easy to understand terms, what you need to know and do; taking you easily through the whole aviation medical process.
