Summer season gets into its stride
UK air traffic in May increased by 3.1 per cent on the same month last year as NATS, the UK’s major provider of air traffic services, safely handled 234,610 flights, an average of more than 7,500 per day.
Non-transatlantic overflights were the biggest growth market, increasing by 8.8 per cent. Flights to and from Spain grew by 10 per cent and Germany by 9 per cent. Domestic UK flights, however, dropped by 5.8 per cent.
According to Eurocontrol, NATS handled 25 per cent of Europe’s traffic in May, and was accountable for just 1 per cent of Europe’s delay. 99.2 per cent of flights received no NATS-attributable delay; the average NATS delay per delayed flight was 11.6 minutes.
Kathryn Leahy, Chief Operations Officer, said:
“We’re now on track to the summer peak and continue to work closely with our European neighbours to ensure that whatever event or international geopolitical considerations may present, we build in as much resilience as possible to protect schedules and get people off on their summer holidays on time.”
