Ongoing work to explore the opportunities and benefits of using ADS-B, which broadcasts aircraft location and data from an airframe, to improve performance. Current work is focused on the potential use of ADS-B in General Aviation, while other work includes analysis of the future use of ADS-B for separation services in Oceanic airspace.


ADS-B has the potential to provide greater accuracy on aircraft positioning, helping to improve safety and performance. ADS-B via satellite communications (SATCOM) can increase sharing of location reports from aircraft to ground systems over areas which currently have no radar coverage, such as over the Atlantic (Oceanic airspace). This will increase capacity in these areas and enable fuel savings for our customers. It also has the potential to reduce infrastructure costs.


Space-based ADS-B expected to deploy in Oceanic airspace in 2018; Initial capabilities available to GA now, with additional technologies following over the next 18-24 months.
