Automated controller support tools for separation management


We are exploring how to improve separation management by introducing automated analysis of data to detect potential conflicts and propose interventions to controllers. These interventions can then be selected and executed in real time. The data used will include improved predicted aircraft trajectories, improved conformance monitoring and conflict detection, as well as meteorological information.


Providing support to the controllers from automated tools can reduce controller workload, improve safety and facilitate new controller team organisations. Lower workload and improved assurance of separation buffers can increase airspace capacity.


Validation is anticipated to be completed in 2018-2020.


This research is primarily being done by NATS.
