LPAT (Low Power ADS-B Transceiver) on a drone


This project is exploring the possibility of using NATS LPAT ADS-B technology on RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) to improve RPAS visibility to other airspace users. This trial will demonstrate this technology within current CAA RPAS operational regulations. It is expected to contribute to eventual RPAS operations in Class G airspace.


One of the emerging challenges in air traffic management is how to safely manage the growing numbers of RPAS operating in “uncontrolled” Class G airspace shared with General Aviation aircraft. We hope that, in time, this project could provide electronic visibility of RPAS activities to other airspace users and ATC where this is of operational relevance, thereby improving safety for everyone and supporting the growth of the RPAS industry.


Trials are ongoing and will continue into 2016.
