Terminal Manoeuvring Area Tools

The project is developing enhanced electronic controller tools that will bring the benefits of trajectory based operations – better prediction and coordination of aircraft trajectories – to the highly complex Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA) environment. These tools will help make use of the highly complex airspace around busy TMAs safer and more efficient.

Air traffic control within busy TMAs remains heavily tactical. Providing an enhanced trajectory- based tools system has the potential to deliver a number of benefits, including reducing costs for our customers by providing more optimal profiles, thereby reducing level-offs and decreasing fuel burn; improving safety, providing conflict monitoring and alerting more accurately and further in advance than today; increasing capacity; and reducing controller workloads.

The project is still in the early R&D stage, with a third validation activity planned for 2016. The project will continue into SESAR 2020.

The work on tools for high density/high complexity TMAs is being undertaken solely by NATS.
