NATS Prestwick unveils plans for new staff wellbeing hub

21 January 2025

NATS, the UK’s leading provider of ATC services, has appointed building and infrastructure company Tilbury Douglas, to deliver a multimillion-pound Staff Support Facility at its Prestwick operational control centre, with completion scheduled for Autumn 2025.

NATS’ Prestwick Centre provides vital ATC services for airports across Scotland, as well as managing the UK’s upper airspace. Spanning 682sqm across three floors, the new facility will replace existing working facilities and include a new medical centre, bedrooms for operational employees and state-of-the-art gym with changing rooms, promoting a healthy lifestyle for NATS employees.

Commenting on the plans, Siobhian Brown, Ayr MSP, said: “This news is an important development for both NATS’ staff and the local economy. I am delighted to see the organisation investing in its Prestwick Centre, ensuring staff have modern, purpose-built facilities that they need to continue delivering vital air traffic control services to airports across Scotland.

“Having met with NATS’ to discuss the plans, I am confident this investment strengthens the site’s operational capacity and reinforces Prestwick’s long-standing role as a key hub for air traffic control.

“The development will bring benefits to the local community, providing construction jobs during the building phase and creating long-term employment opportunities. I look forward to seeing these plans come to life and wish NATS’ every success in the next stages of development.”

Paul Peers, GM, NATS Prestwick, said: “We are excited to work alongside Tilbury Douglas to bring this cutting-edge, sustainable facility to life. This new building will support our staff’s well-being while also contributing to our broader sustainability and social responsibility objectives. I am also pleased that the modular design of the new building will enable easy expansion based on our future business requirements.”

Tilbury Douglas will construct a high-quality, sustainable building that will enhance NATS’ operations and provide long-term benefits for staff. Designed with a focus on reducing carbon, the facility aligns with NATS’ environmental goals and contributes to Scottish Zero Waste objectives.

Barry O’Hagan, Regional Director at Tilbury Douglas, added: “Delivering this project in a live environment with strict security protocols and constrained logistics presents an exciting challenge. Our team is well-equipped to ensure successful delivery while maintaining high standards of safety and sustainability.”

The project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 will begin in February 2025 and focus on substructure works and installation of modular units, followed by Phase 2 which will involve the demolition of the existing Atlantic House building, creating opportunities to improve landscaping and enhance biodiversity on the site. Improvements to the main Prestwick building will also include new meeting rooms and multi-faith room.
