As well as hiring qualified and experienced engineers, we have two early entry routes for bringing passionate, but inexperienced people, into the business to develop their skills and expertise. The two routes are:
Our Engineering Apprenticeship scheme
Our Airport Engineering Technician scheme
Each of these excellent schemes is described in turn below.
Engineering Apprenticeship scheme
In this scheme you will be trained to become an operational engineer at NATS, this means you will learn about the design, installation, maintenance and reparation of all operational systems and equipment, this is the equipment used by our Air Traffic Controllers and customers throughout the UK. Our systems and equipment can be found at our Air Traffic Centres in Swanwick and Prestwick, at airports and at various (remote) sites across the UK.
The 3-year Apprenticeship scheme is designed to bring new entrants into NATS with limited work experience through a structured training program. Through remote learning (1 day per week) you will obtain 2 formal qualifications; a Level 4 Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician (Lead engineering maintenance technician / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) Qualification and a HNC in Electrical Engineering.
Alongside the formal education, NATS has designed an internal learning pathway to provide you with the required ATC specific engineering knowledge and skills as well as provide an opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills too. You will get an opportunity to apply your new skills and knowledge on-the-job with support from experienced NATS engineers. Ultimately, the scheme will provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a qualified and experienced operational engineer.
This is an entry level role where candidates undertake formal training at their allocated airport to reach the standard of an Airport Maintenance Engineer, and subsequently an Airport Operational Engineer.
The role is built around achieving key training and competency milestones and candidates are expected to drive forward their own training plans, maintain good quality training records and act in a manner which promotes safety and protects the operational equipment.
Within this role, candidates can expect to get hands-on under supervision in the maintenance of airfield and tower equipment in addition to attending training courses back at NATS HQ or direct with manufacturers.
