Place and Mobility of Work

Before you apply, consider whether you can relocate and the impact this will have on your personal relationships with friends and family.

We have sites all over the UK, from Aberdeen to Hampshire, Belfast to Cardiff. As an air traffic controller, you could be posted to any of these sites based on the company's needs.

Whilst you may state a preference, you’ll need to adapt to different environments and embrace potentially living elsewhere.

Medical Clearance

To be an operational air traffic controller, you must hold a valid CAA Class 3 Medical Certificate.

You need to be open and honest in your consultation with the Aeromedical Team and completing the health questionnaire. You need to let us know your full history of any illness or injury, any mental health conditions, addictions, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD.

We must also know about any history of migraines, asthma or visual problems. Please be 100% honest in all the information you provide us, even if it includes something you may think is irrelevant.

Security Clearance

We have a strong security vetting process, and you need to be open and honest about security issues. We will contact your previous employers and verify your qualifications.

Any false statement or deliberate omission in the information you give us may disqualify you from your job. So please be 100% honest, even if it means telling us something you are not proud of.

Please ensure you are aware of our Security Clearance Policy requirements before applying for the role.

To apply for the Trainee Air Traffic Controller position, applicants must have indefinite, unrestricted right to work in the UK. We are unable to consider candidates whose right to work is time-limited, subject to visa conditions or sponsorship.

Workplace Conduct and Behaviour

We’re committed to creating an environment where employees can always be themselves at work. That means respecting differences, valuing opinions and listening to others.

It’s important our people think about how their behaviour can impact others, intentionally or unintentionally.

Also, as air traffic controllers, you need to be able to be calm and measured in the face of setbacks and manage pressure and stress.

Drugs and Alcohol

As air traffic controllers, you will work in Safety-Critical roles. This means your actions have a direct impact on operational safety. Should you be involved in drug or alcohol misuse, the risk to members of staff and members of the public is raised significantly.

Alcohol limits are very strict for air traffic controllers. The drink-drive limit in the UK is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. For our Safety-Critical roles, the limit is 25% of this.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that taking drugs is forbidden – this includes ‘legal highs’. If you’re taking any new medication, you must tell your line manager at the start of your shift and inform the Aeromedical Team.

Random drug and alcohol tests can happen from day one of your job.
