Inside Delta’s people-first approach

Aviation asks a great deal of the people who keep it moving, from the ground to the sky. ELEVATE spoke to Delta Air Lines about how it supports its people, the demands placed on those working in safety-critical roles, and why the airline sees caring for its employees as fundamental to delivering as a team as well as for its customers.

Putting people first

Putting people first has been at the forefront of Delta’s values for a century, helping their employees, customers and communities to thrive [1]. The health and wellbeing of Delta employees is fundamental to both the employee experience and the safe, reliable operation of the airline.

Delta recognizes that employees perform demanding work in dynamic environments, often navigating irregular schedules, operational pressures, and significant responsibilities. Supporting their physical and mental wellbeing helps employees perform at their best while contributing to a strong safety culture.

How do you support the physical, mental, and emotional health of employees and protect against the risks people can face in such a critical working environment?

To ensure that every employee has the resources they need to thrive, whether they work on the ramp or in the flight deck, Delta defines four key focus areas for its mental health investments: accessibility, quality, experience and affordability. By embedding these values into its mental health strategy early on and putting them into action, we proactively use them to shape the programs and resources available to employees.

Delta recognizes that delivering impactful workplace mental health programs requires integrating HR expertise with clinical expertise to understand the care needed, so we developed a multidisciplinary team to tackle the complexities of mental health care from all angles.

That’s why Delta’s Global Health and Wellness team includes HR professionals, data scientists, licensed mental health clinicians, physicians and other specialists with direct ties to health care practice.

This multidisciplinary model aligns mental health care with our broader health function, integrating mental wellness, preventive programs, physical health and employee benefits into one cohesive entity.

In addition, leaders receive suicide awareness training and Delta's network of Wellness Champions promotes awareness of resources and encourages employees to prioritize their wellbeing.

Collectively, these programs help mitigate the personal and professional challenges that can arise in a complex operational environment.

How do you support people in safety-critical roles, such as pilots and cabin crew, in managing the pressures of their jobs and their personal lives?

We provide a range of resources designed to support employees in safety-sensitive and operational roles, recognizing the unique demands associated with aviation careers.

Through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), employees and their benefits-eligible dependents have access to confidential counselling, coaching, and wellbeing resources at no cost. They can also participate in support groups, nutrition and weight management programs, fitness initiatives, and other wellness offerings.

For pilots specifically, enhancements were incorporated into the program to include a network of pilot-focused providers knowledgeable about aviation-related concerns and the unique stresses associated with flight operations.

The Delta Medical Team, which includes a physician serving as Director of Pilot Health Services, directly supports pilots’ health and wellness by providing aerospace medicine expertise to pilots and acting as a liaison between the pilot, their AME, the FAA and other associated stakeholders.

Additionally, the EAP Critical Incident Response Program offers specialized support following traumatic workplace events or accidents. This service helps employees and workgroups process difficult experiences, build resilience, and access appropriate care when needed.

Does technology play a role in keeping employees safe and helping them perform at their best?

Yes, technology plays an increasingly important role in connecting employees with wellness resources and support when and where they need it. Many of our wellbeing programs and services are accessible through mobile apps and digital platforms, allowing employees to use resources regardless of location or schedule.

Through these digital tools, employees can access counseling and coaching services, wellness programs, health education resources, and incentive-based wellbeing initiatives. The convenience and accessibility of technology help reduce barriers to care and enable employees to take a more proactive approach to managing their health and wellbeing.

From the perspective of people working in critical roles, what are the key ingredients of delivering a safe and efficient service?

Safety remains the foundation of Delta’s operation and is fostered by strong employee engagement in voluntary safety reporting programs, operational data analysis, fatigue risk management, and advanced safety analytics.

Our utilization of these reporting and feedback systems provides valuable insight into potential hazards, supports effective risk management, and drives continuous safety improvement.

These efforts are further supported by our Safety Management System (SMS) and observational safety programs that help proactively enhance operational performance and maintain the highest safety standards.

Finally, what drives Delta’s approach to looking after its people?

Beyond safety, Delta’s commitment to its people is rooted in a culture of care, integrity, resilience, and servant leadership.

We empower employees to speak up, support them through a culture built on fairness and continuous improvement, invest in their wellbeing and professional growth, and foster an environment where collaboration, respect, accountability, and belonging are core to how we work together.

Simply put, Delta believes its people are its competitive advantage, and caring for them is fundamental to delivering for our customers and each other.
