Swanwick welcomes Russian delegation

10 May 2012

A delegation of Russian air traffic control specialists visited Swanwick to gain an insight into NATS’ preparations for London 2012.

Russia is hosting the Winter Olympics in 2014 and Sochi Airport is undergoing extensive work in the run up to the Games, including the building of an additional runway.

NATS ATC lead for the London 2012 Olympics, Steve Patterson, said: “The delegation was keen to share our experiences in the run-up to London 2012 in preparation for their own event.

“We gave our visitors a tour of two operations rooms and an overview of the commercial services we offer, such as airspace design and engineering.”

European Business Development Manager, Paul Campbell added: “We were pleased to host the Russian delegation at Swanwick. It was a great opportunity to share our learning and expertise with our Russian colleagues as we start to build our relationship with them.

“I will be visiting Moscow soon to see what preparations they have made for the Winter Olympics and, importantly, to see if there are any opportunities for NATS to assist them.”

Speaking about the visit, Moscow-based Senior Air Traffic Controller, Roman Rakov said: “It was a very useful visit and fascinating to see all the planning and work that NATS has put into making the London 2012 games a success.

“We learned a lot and wish our colleagues in NATS every success this summer.”
